These are hearty cream coloured vegetables, sometimes blushed with pink purple. They are usually rounded slightly flattened with wispy roots. Small young turnips have a distinctive, hot, peppery, slightly sweet flavour. Larger turnips tend to be coarser with a less refined flavour.
