Plantains are popular in the Caribbean, South America and African cooking. They look like large bananas with thick tough skins that vary from green to yellow with black spots. They do taste slightly of bananas but they are much less sweet. Plantains are always cooked and used as a savoury ingredient. They are usually sliced, fried and served as an accompaniment in place of rice or potatoes. When cooked, the flesh is more starchier than a banana and are similar to a potato.
