Jersey Royals have a protected designation of origin (POD), which aims to protect the names of regional foods. This means only potatoes grown in Jersey may be sold under the name Jersey Royals. These are new potato are highly regarded and are renowned for their flavour and texture, they are at their best during April and June. The fertiliser they use for the potatoes is called vraic, which is made from seaweed collected from Jersey beaches. This fertiliser gives the potatoes their characteristically nutty flavour.
