Physalis also known as Cape Gooseberry, this fruit is believed to be native to South America.
It was cultivated in South Africa and this where it got its alternative name after coming into vogue with early settlers. They are encased in brown paper thin leaves. They have a sweet tangy flavour, they are most often eaten raw, and are often used as decoration. They can also be used to make jam.
